Department of Pastoral Theology

Pastoral Theology is one of the departments in the Faculty of Theology, the Mother Faculty, of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). 

The department has been in existence since the beginning of CUEA in 1984 then as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA), after the approval by the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education.

 

Vision of the Department

Pastoral Department: An organ of the Holy Spirit filled family of God, within the CUEA community life and mission, pastorally committed to Holistic Evangelization and Integral Development.

 

Mission Statement

To liberate and transform God’s family in AMECEA region and beyond to a credible and prophetic witness to Christ’s salvific event, by promoting reverential dialogue, unity, reconciliation, justice, peace and solidarity, through:

  • Promotion of deeper evangelization, constant conversion and prayer, inculturation, ecumenism and inter-religious dialogues;
  • Relevant and quality assurance formation of students in pastoral theology as agents of evangelization;
  • Continued research on revitalizing and fostering the role of small Christian Communities in evangelization and community service;
  • Research and publications on the pastoral challenges affecting the Church and society in AMECEA countries and Africa;
  • Empowering the laity, clergy, religious men and women to play their active role in the Church and society.

 

The Mandate of the Department:

The mandate of the department is of a pastoral and academic nature and includes the following:

  • Teaching, research, publication and community outreach;
  • Studying priority pastoral challenges in the Church and society and proposing common strategies to respond to them at different levels;
  • To collaborate in evaluating the pastoral programmes of common interest in the AMECEA countries;
  • To undertake pastoral research in areas of common interest and analysis of important data for the AMECEA countries and beyond;
  • To promote human rights, justice and peace, freedom of religion, advocacy for the oppressed and good governance through teaching, research, publications, community service and building;
  • To coordinate and make regular evaluation of its programmes and activities and take appropriate action in line with the vision, mission and action plan of the Faculty of Theology and the University.
