I am pleased to welcome you to The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) School of Nursing. Thank you for choosing to be a nurse! We value our students who are a central part of our existence.  You will experience a holistic transformational education in nursing that will certainly expand your opportunities for professional and career development. We offer both direct entry and upgrading programmes in Nursing that are dynamic and responsive to the dynamic health needs of society. The school has qualified and committed faculty who work tirelessly to ensure students get the best learning experience in Nursing. We are committed to preparing clinically competent, caring nursing professionals who are ready for a life of service, continued learning, leadership and community service guided by Christian values. 

The BScN Programme is aimed at preparing nurses who are self-directing with appropriate knowledge, skills and values to provide leadership in Clinical Nursing Practice, Management, Education, Research and Community Service. The graduate should be able to function effectively in a variety of settings, preventing sickness, caring for the sick and assisting individuals, families and communities to promote and maintain their health in the most appropriate and affordable way. The School of Nursing offers students with endless professional and career opportunities. Graduates of the programme have great opportunities to study and work locally and abroad in developed countries such as the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia.

The BScN Programme is a 4-year programme as structured in the below table. It has seven semesters for classwork and five semesters for clinical placement.

About the Dean

He is a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Arusha, Tanzania. He holds a Doctorate (STD) in Moral Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium (2003); Masters in Moral Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven (1998); Licentiate in Moral Theology from The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Kenya (1992); Advanced Diploma in Theology from St. Paul’s Senior Seminary – Tabora, Tanzania. He is a Moral Theologian whose research and teaching spheres include: Social Teaching of the Church, Nature and Research in Moral Theology, Bioethics, Living and Promoting Justice and Peace, Ethics of Human Rights, and Ecological Ethics. He has a notable interest in African Theology. He has supervised ten (10) doctoral dissertations and thirty-seven (37) licentiate theses. Rev. Prof. Rwiza was a Visiting Professor Fellow in the Jesuit Institute, Boston College, USA (August – December 2019)

Year of Establishment

The Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing (BScN) programme was established in 2010 by the
Assumption Sisters of Nairobi under the name “Regina Pacis University College (RPUC)”, a
Constituent College of The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). Later, in September
2016, the programme was transferred to CUEA under the faculty of Sciences. Then, in January
2020, the University created the CUEA School of Nursing to house the Nursing Programmes.
The programme is accredited by the Commission for University Education and regulated by the
Nursing Council of Kenya.

Main programs

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) offers two Nursing Programmes namely
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Basic 4 years duration, and Bachelor of Science in
Nursing (BScN) Upgrading for 3 years duration. The upgrading program gives an opportunity to
nurses to advance professionally while providing service. The two Programs are aimed at
preparing nurses who are self-directing with appropriate knowledge, skills and values to provide
leadership in Clinical Nursing practice, Education, Research and Community.

Key achievement

The school has trained and graduated over 270 students since its inception, these students have
contributed positively in their various places of work both locally and abroad (USA, Britain,
among others). Many of the graduates able to publish their research project findings in a referral
journals. Furthermore, during the training period, they participated in several community service
activities and provided holistic health services to individuals, and families.

Uniqueness of the program

The School offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program that equips
nurses with knowledge, skills, and competencies for clinical practice, education, research, and
mid-level management in healthcare institutions. It nurtures responsible professionalism through
mentorship and role modeling. It emphasizes innovative research to address current and evolving
health challenges. This enables our graduates to provide leadership in the healthcare system and
to meet the needs of the communities where they are placed.
