Introduction

The Faculty of Arts and social sciences was established in the year 1989 and happens to be one of the oldest academic Faculties where scholars and Researchers teach students in order to help them navigate through various academic offerings and make choices that reflect student’s goals and priorities. The Faculty of Arts and social Sciences has classes fascinating course topics, personalized degree programs and numerous research opportunities across a diverse field of subjects. The Faculty also has seven (7) full-fledged academic departments namely: Development studies, English, Geography and Environmental Science, History, Kiswahili, Religious studies, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Foreign languages.

We offer an array of Certificate, diploma and degree programs so as to meet the diverse intellectual interests of our students. Our programs have been carefully designed and constantly reviewed in consultation with all the stakeholders in order to support student career goals and also prepare them for graduate studies. As students go through their studies, advisors of the Faculty support them in every step of the way. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is known for its leadership, passion and curiosity about research and teaching. In addition, the Faculty also makes a point of connecting with students so as to create a fulfilling academic experience.

About the Dean

Muchoki Francis Macharia (Ph.D.) is a senior lecturer and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASSc) at The Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree from Kenyatta University. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nairobi. Muchoki has taught in many schools, colleges, and universities in Kenya. He has taught at Kagumo College, Egerton University, and The Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He has served as head of the department, Faculty Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Key Achievements

The faculty of Arts and Social Sciences prides itself as a pacesetter in academic activities. The faculty has launched an online Journal Kumekucha; a Swahili word for dawn has come. Our staff is engaged in both local and international research. The faculty has in the recent past accelerated program development, particularly at the post-graduate level. The faculty has also established institutional linkages with various institutions of higher learning. The faculty holds an interdisciplinary session once every academic year to allow staff and students to interrogate various academic issues.

Institutional Linkages And Partnership

The Faculty takes a keen interest in partnerships for building capacity and internationalizing the quality of education offered. The faculty also collaborates with industry to give our students a practical feel of their educational training. Our students work in the industry for a period of three months to enhance the practical aspects of their educational training. The faculty has established institutional linkages and partnerships with Holy Cross College in the USA and St Elizabeth University of Science and Social Work. Other partnerships that are in the process include the Institute of Mass Communication and the Catholic University of France.

Student Life

The student population at the faculty is 746. At the faculty, students develop knowledge in their area of discipline and acquire skills for rewarding and meaningful careers. Student support services are available at the faculty. The faculty-student office is located on the ground floor of Nsubuga Hall where the faculty-student government consults on various academic matters with other students and staff.

Community Service

The faculty is committed to community service in and outside the campus. Faculty community service activities are in line with the vision and mission of the University. Apart from material support, the faculty envisage the service-learning model of serving the community. The faculty has identified educational institutions such as Light Academy in Rongai and is collaborating with them in the provision of learning materials and other support services.
