AMECEA Plenary Concludes Study Sessions as Bishops Prepare for Business Deliberations

The study sessions of the 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly concluded on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, with goodwill messages from partner organizations, a panel discussion on opportunities for young people, and the celebration of the Holy Mass.

The morning session opened with messages of solidarity and support from AMECEA's development partners, including the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Caritas, Missio, the Archdiocese of Cologne (Germany), Norwegian Church Aid, and Couples for Christ, among other organizations. The partners reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the Church in advancing pastoral, social, and development initiatives across the Eastern African region.

This was followed by a panel discussion on opportunities available to young people, featuring leaders from different sectors. Among the panelists was Mr. Paul Russo , Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), whose institution has operations in at least six countries across the region.

Addressing the plenary, Mr. Russo encouraged young people to remain resilient and determined in pursuing their aspirations despite difficult circumstances. He noted that every individual has a unique story and background, urging the youth not to allow their circumstances to define their future. Drawing from his personal journey, he shared that he grew up in the remote county of Marsabit and attributed part of his success to the values and opportunities he received through the Catholic Church.

Later in the day, members of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference led the bishops and delegates in the celebration of the Holy Mass, presided over by Cardinal Protase Rugambwa .

With the conclusion of the study sessions, the plenary now transitions to its business phase, scheduled to run from Thursday, July 23, to Saturday, July 25. During these sessions, the bishops will deliberate on reports from their institutions within the AMECEA region and conclude with the appointment of various officeholders to serve in the institutions. The Closing Mass will be on Sunday, July 26.
