CUEA, Iranian Embassy Explore Academic and Cultural Collaboration
The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is exploring opportunities for academic, scientific and cultural collaboration with the Cultural Council of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nairobi.
The proposed partnership was discussed during a meeting between representatives of the Iranian Cultural Council, led by Dr. Mahdi Baiki, and Prof. Damian Maingi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Partnerships) at CUEA. The meeting sought to identify areas of mutual interest and establish a framework for cooperation between the two institutions.
Key areas of discussion included interreligious dialogue, joint academic and scientific research, language education, scholarship opportunities and faculty exchange.
On interreligious dialogue, the meeting explored initiatives to promote mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and respect among different faith communities. Proposed activities included interfaith forums, seminars and public lectures, as well as joint initiatives focusing on peacebuilding, ethical values and social cohesion.
The two sides also considered opportunities to organise joint scientific conferences, academic symposia and research seminars. Such engagements would provide a platform for scholars to identify priority research areas, share knowledge and publish collaborative research findings.
Another proposed area of cooperation was the introduction of Persian language courses at CUEA. Discussions focused on curriculum development, teaching resources, instructional support and the identification of qualified instructors. Opportunities for cultural immersion were also considered as a way of enriching the language-learning experience.
The meeting further explored scholarship opportunities for CUEA students interested in pursuing higher education in Iran. This would involve identifying relevant academic disciplines and programmes, as well as examining eligibility requirements, application procedures and possible funding arrangements.
In addition, the proposed partnership could facilitate faculty exchange between CUEA and Iranian universities through visiting lectureships, academic residencies and joint teaching activities. The initiative is expected to create opportunities for collaborative research, staff development and the exchange of academic expertise.
Beyond these areas, the meeting considered the possibility of broader cultural exchanges and joint educational initiatives to strengthen relations between the institutions.
Towards a Framework for Cooperation
As part of the deliberations, the meeting recommended developing a framework to guide the proposed partnership, with a possible Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing the basis for formal cooperation.
The two sides also agreed on the need to identify priority areas for implementation, assign responsibilities and timelines, and maintain consultations towards the next meeting.
The proposed collaboration presents an opportunity for CUEA to strengthen its international academic partnerships while promoting intercultural understanding, research collaboration and knowledge exchange.
