CUEA Promotes Practical Skills Through Computer Laboratory Assessments and Examinations

By Georbert Athoo, CPM

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) continues to promote practical learning through computer-based assessments and examinations in the Department of Computer and Information Science, equipping students with hands-on skills essential for the technology industry.

Through practical sessions in the computer laboratories, students apply classroom knowledge to real-world computing tasks, strengthening their competence in programming, database management, networking and software development.

Units such as .NET Programming and Database Systems give students opportunities to develop, test and troubleshoot programs, design databases and understand how computer systems communicate. These experiences help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical demands of the workplace.

Laboratory-based assessments also enable lecturers to evaluate students’ individual abilities through practical tasks, supporting fair grading based on demonstrated competence, established assessment criteria and academic integrity.

The computer laboratories provide an important learning environment where students develop problem-solving, logical thinking, accuracy and confidence in using technology. Collaboration among lecturers, laboratory technical staff and students further supports effective practical learning and assessment.

As organisations increasingly depend on digital solutions, these skills provide an important foundation for graduates pursuing careers in software development, database administration, networking, systems analysis and information technology.

Through practical computing education, CUEA continues to advance academic excellence while nurturing competent, ethical and innovative graduates prepared to contribute to society’s digital transformation.
