CUEA to Host Expert Dialogue on Transitional Justice in Wartime

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), through its Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Justice and Ethics (CSJE), will host a scholarly dialogue on “Transitional Justice in Wartime” on 3 November 2026.

The event will bring together two distinguished scholars to examine the legal, ethical and ecumenical dimensions of conflict, justice and peacebuilding.

🔹 Dr. Joshua Joseph Niyo, Regional Legal Adviser for East and Central Africa at the Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre in Nairobi, will deliver a lecture titled “Walking the Tightrope: International Humanitarian Law in the Great Lakes and Eastern Africa Region.” His presentation will explore the challenges of applying international humanitarian law in a region affected by protracted conflicts.

🔹 Archimandrite Very Rev. Prof. Dr. Cyril Hovorun, Professor of Ecclesiology, International Relations and Ecumenism at the Stockholm School of Eastern Christian Studies and Director of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, will deliver a keynote address titled “Christian Churches and Ecumenical Lessons from the Russia-Ukraine War.”

The dialogue will provide an opportunity for scholars, students and practitioners to engage critically with questions of justice, accountability, international humanitarian law and the role of religious institutions in responding to conflict.

Through this engagement, CUEA continues to foster interdisciplinary scholarship and informed dialogue on issues shaping justice, peace and human dignity.
