Catherine Naswa MACHYO – Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education

Catherine is pursuing a Ph.D. (In Progress) in Curriculum and Instruction, and holds an MBA in Strategic Management & Human resource management, in addition to M. Ed in Curriculum and Instruction, with emphasis on research methods, Curriculum Development, Curriculum Evaluation, and Women studies. She has widely published on education after she wrote a thesis on social and cultural factors in the career and educational plans of young Kenyan Women. Her long experience of two decades includes Teaching Educational Research Methods, Gender issues in education, curriculum development, Evaluation and Assessment, and the mobilization and management of intuitional resources both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Some of her key research publications include ‘An Assessment of practical skills in a competency-based curriculum in Temeke, Tanzania, Head teachers’ preparedness in the financial management of Primary schools, ‘Sexual harassment in institutions of higher learning’ ‘Conflict Resolution in pre-schools, the case of Kenyan nursery schools’. A paper presented at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa Global ethics forum, ‘Ethical Issues in Assessment of learning outcomes in institutions of higher learning: An analysis of the issues. A paper presented at the ACUHIAM conference, Catholic universities in Africa for Peace and Reconciliation: searching for root causes and solutions to violence and conflicts. An Analysis of Young Women’s political participation in primary school elections: Lessons for Peace A paper presented at the annual peace conference in Nakuru 2016.

She was greatly involved in the research on the Action for Children’s Rights in Education (ACRE) research project. Catherine is experienced in Educational matters with special reference to curriculum and instruction and gender mainstreaming in the curriculum. She has vast experience in the training of teachers and school principals in the implementation of various school programs, curriculum design, and curriculum evaluation.  She has contributed to the designing of the Competence-Based Curriculum for Business Studies for Senior School. She has also been teaching subject methods business studies to teacher trainees and has previously taught and examined Accounting at the secondary school level. My areas of interest are in educational issues which include Curriculum and Assessment Issues, Gender-based violence in schools, and Governance in the educational sector. I am also interested in youth sexual behavior in relation to HIV and AIDS infection. She also has engaged in a number of educational researches touching on varied educational matters including teacher training, curriculum implementation, curriculum evaluation, sexual violence in schools, school governance, Gender issues, and HIV/AIDS.   In addition, she has published manuals and modules for distance learning students in subject methods business studies, and Educational Assessment and Evaluation.  She has also co-authored a book on the guidelines for teachers on teaching practice and Business Studies Form 4.
